The main competition to the Bowie knife from the late 1830’s to the period just after the Civil War was the Arkansas Toothpick. The Arkansas Toothpick got its namesake as an ironic reference to the coarse, rough and tumble culture that populated the lowlands of Arkansas and the Mississippi delta in the mid 19th century.
Travelling journalists from Europe often made up stories about how they commonly saw men and old boys picking their teeth with giant knives that they dubbed Arkansas Toothpicks. Like the Bowie it was frequently a large knife almost always double edged with a sharp acute point.
The knife almost always had a double quillon guard and many were fancy and some imitated the Bowies of the day in size and appearance. Sure, some were plain, but most were elaborately decorated. Our version has a substantial double edge spear point blade, with a Malaysian Sal wood handle and a fancy pommel with an alligator motif. The scabbard is equally stunning, it’s finely made and decoratively enhanced to complement the handle.

Spyderco named this knife after its principal job function, to assist. The Assist Black Blade is a lightweight folder for emergency fire/rescue professionals and the well-equipped citizen who rely on knives to be straightforward in use and perform flawlessly. The blade is coated in non-reflective black carbon nitride with a patented lift-and-pry (blunt-nose) shape made from high-carbon VG-10 stainless steel and loaded with teeth. Most of its 3-3/8″ (86mm) cutting edge is serrated with the last inch at the tip left Plain Edged.
Above the one-hand-open hole sits a feature called a Cobra Hood™. It’s a metal cap that guides the thumb over the hole for quick, by-feel opening then doubles as a textured leveraging platform for your thumb during cutting. A wavy pattern cut out of the top of the blade and again along the handle is for controlled rope cutting. By placing a rope in the groove (between the partially open blade and handle) you can squeeze the blade shut, slicing and trimming rope in a controlled movement without fully exposing the cutting edge. The handle is black lightweight fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) with a survival whistle built into the butt end, shrill and high-pitched enough to get you noticed. A reinforced wire pocket clip attaches through the handle on either side for left- or right-hand use. A retractable and replaceable carbide-tip glass/ice breaker is housed inside the handle and is exposed when the closed blade is squeezed into the handle, retracting when pressure is released.

The VG-10 patented blunt-tipped blade is a toothy eighty-percent SpyderEdged for aggressively cutting seatbelts and fibrous material. The last inch of the tip we’ve left PlainEdge for detailed cutting (think sharpening pencils). Perched above the Round Hole, a Cobra Hood positions the thumb directly over the hole for quick blade deployment, then doubles as a leveraging platform for the thumb. For ZT performance, the blade is S35VN stainless steel, which provides the ability to take a razor edge, excellent edge retention, strength, and toughness. A stonewashed finish on the blade hides hard-use scratches and makes maintenance easier. The sweeping lines of the original 0777 are preserved in the lightweight carbon-fiber handle that fits securely in the hand. This beautiful William Henry exclusive blade steel (patent pending) incorporates copper and stainless steel into a 45 layer Wave Damascus that features a core of VG-5 stainless steel. This steel attains a hardness of HRC 59, excellent by any standards, at the cutting edge.
TITANIUM

Called 6Al/4V, it is titanium with a little aluminum and vanadium added in for additional toughness and tensile strength.
