The main competition to the Bowie knife from the late 1830’s to the period just after the Civil War was the Arkansas Toothpick. The Arkansas Toothpick got its namesake as an ironic reference to the coarse, rough and tumble culture that populated the lowlands of Arkansas and the Mississippi delta in the mid 19th century.
Travelling journalists from Europe often made up stories about how they commonly saw men and old boys picking their teeth with giant knives that they dubbed Arkansas Toothpicks. Like the Bowie it was frequently a large knife almost always double edged with a sharp acute point.
The knife almost always had a double quillon guard and many were fancy and some imitated the Bowies of the day in size and appearance. Sure, some were plain, but most were elaborately decorated. Our version has a substantial double edge spear point blade, with a Malaysian Sal wood handle and a fancy pommel with an alligator motif. The scabbard is equally stunning, it’s finely made and decoratively enhanced to complement the handle.

Our improved Cold Steel Japanese Training Swords are closely modeled after the world-famous Warrior series swords. Featuring an intricately detailed imitation cord wrap grip – molded in high impact polypropylene – they offer superior grip and comfort as well as more realistic training potential for the modern Martial Artist. Hundreds of years ago, the Japanese discovered a simple truth; that to become a good swordsman you’ll have to practice, a great deal. To become a great swordsman you’ll have to practice with a “live blade”. And during the period between “good” and “great”, you should spend your time building your skills and confidence enough to wield a razor sharp Katana safely and effectively. To accomplish this, the Japanese relied on a simple wooden sword called a “bokken” for much of their training. It was made from the super tough wood of the Japanese White Oak, a wood they called Kashi. The swords produced from this wood had the advantage of replicating the size, weight and feel of a steel sword. Authentic Kashi wood Bokkens are still used today, but are becoming quite costly. They also have the disadvantages, being made of wood, that they may rot, crack split or splinter. Cold Steel’s solution to these dilemmas was to design a synthetic substitute, low in price and impervious to the elements. The Cold Steel Training Bokken is made of the heaviest grade polypropylene available and closely duplicate a real Katana or Bokken in length, size, weight and feel. While they’re not quite as rigid as wood, they have the advantages of being virtually unbreakable and remarkably stiff and cut resistant. The Kobun® is a lightweight Tanto styled boot knife. It takes its namesake from the Japanese martial, or underworld where the word “Kobun” means “soldier”. It’s a fitting name for a knife like the Kobun®, which was effectively designed to be “a good soldier”. In profile it closely resembles our Master Tanto, but it sports a thinner blade, and that supports its main function; to be a light weight boot knife.
Like our Tantos, it features the Tanto styled reinforced point. This contrasts sharply with most boot knives on the market today which are notorious for their paper thin points which are easily broken or bent. In contrast, the Kobun’s® point is highly resistant to bending or breaking because it is reinforced by the full thickness of the blade’s spine which runs almost to the very tip of the blade.
